When the freeze-aster hit Texas in February 2021, I was stuck at home for over 60 hours with no power or heat. The temperature inside my house dipped to 40 degrees for two days. During the day, I found warmth sitting next to my window and painting. It kept my mind off shivering. I didn’t realize the symbolism until I finished the painting — climbing out of the darkness into the warmth of the light.
